Does your mage still have his wand in his hand? If he lost his wand in a fight and you put it in his inventory instead of his hand, it is not working.
Hrm, usual Light in the Darkness fades after awhile.
I wonder if the game considers the wand light akin to Light in the Darkness or not in your case.
